Camp precursor to season

Tiger Football Camp the first glimpse of players that may suit for NHS this fall

While it may be a precursor to the dreaded “daily doubles” of August, organizers say the Tiger Football Camp can prove to be a valuable tune-up for players who haven’t thought about football since Christmas.
The camp, which began Monday at Newberg High School and continues through Thursday, is once again led by 14-year NHS coach Eric Carlson. Forty-five kids ranging from middle school to high school seniors turned out for the camp, Carlson said, to work on fundamentals they learned long ago or to be exposed to the game for the first time.
Carlson said unlike a lot of other sports, football is a game that requires other people to practice properly. “There are certain things you can do by yourself,” he said, adding football isn’t one of them.
Many of the high school players at the camp will carry what they learn this week into a week of conditioning before NHS starts in earnest Aug. 18 with practices twice a day. NHS is fortunate this year, Carlson said, in that a delay in the start of school because of construction means the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams will have a few more practices before school starts.
The NHS varsity team will be unveiled Aug. 28 at a jamboree at Clackamas High School. The first non-league game is a home stand Sept. 5 vs. Benson. The Tigers face Oregon City Sept. 12 before beginning league play against Tigard Sept. 19.
