The Newberg High School football team
got itself back in the Pac-9 Conference playoff fold thanks to a 33-14 win at Forest Grove
Friday.
The win moved the Tigers, who had lost their past two games, to 2-2 overall.
Newberg started the game out quickly on its first possession. After a failed first
drive by the Vikings, the Tigers took over at their own 24-yard line and on the first
play, senior Cole Rogers, who rushed for 131 yards on 14 carries, faked right and went
left down the sideline for a 76-yard touchdown. The conversion failed.
In the second quarter, Newberg went to the air. Quarterback Brad Johnson, who
passed for 185 yards, hit wide receiver Jon Styles for a 20-yard gain. After a short gain
by Rogers, Johnson hooked back up with Styles. Johnsons perfect pass came into the
hands of Styles who outran would-be tacklers for a 61-yard touchdown pass. Newbergs
two-point conversion failed but the Tigers assumed a 12-0 lead with 10:25 remaining in the
first half.
Later in the second quarter, Johnson hit wide receiver Cyrus Hostetler for a
40-yard pass play. After Johnson bailed the Tigers out with a 7-yard gain on
fourth-and-three from the Forest Grove 22, Rogers spun his way to the right side with a
16-yard touchdown run. Again, Newbergs conversion failed but the Tigers extended
their lead to 18-0 with 4:09 remaining in the first half.
Forest Grove managed to get on the board late in the half, thanks to an 11-play,
73-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Nick Heister.
Up 18-8 at halftime, Newbergs opening drive in the second half proved to be
its best of the season. After facing a third-and-27, Johnson hit Styles for a 25-yard
pass. After the Tigers converted a critical fourth down, they calmly continued to march
the ball downfield. The 11-play drive culminated in a 9-yard touchdown reception by Styles
from Johnson with 6:34 remaining in the third quarter. Newberg converted the two-point
conversion for the first time all night.
Nick Skaale put the capper on for the Tigers with a 49-yard touchdown with 1:47
left in the game.
Newberg returns to action Thursday for a 7 p.m. home game against Canby. |
