A late touchdown by Tualatins Jesse Gibson gave the visiting
Timberwolves a 26-22 win over the host Newberg Tigers Friday.
Tualatin got on the board first thanks in part to a Newberg turnover. In the
second quarter, Tualatins Jesse Gibson picked off Newberg junior quarterback Brad
Johnson in the endzone. Tualatin worked the ball upfield thanks to a 30-yard catch by
Trevor Gamache and a 17-yard run by Gibson. One play later, Tualatin quarterback Kyle
Mignano hit a wide-open Nick Carney in the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown pass to give the
Timberwolves a 7-0 lead with 8:18 remaining in the first half.
After the Newberg offense went three and out, Tualatin struck again.
Mignano layed out a perfect pass to Gibson for a 44-yard touchdown with 5:08 left. With
the extra point, the Timberwolves seized a 14-0 lead.
The Tigers, who had good starting field position throughout the first half,
couldnt manage to consistently move the ball and keep its drives alive. But after
Newbergs defense forced a Tualatin punt with 1:20 left, things finally started going
Newbergs way. After a botched punt by Tualatins Carney, Newberg took over at
its own 36.
The Tigers slowly started to move the ball up the field and got a big 19-yard
run by Johnson with 21 seconds remaining. A play later, senior wide receiver Justin Burger
hauled in a 27-yard pass to put the Tigers at Tualatins 3-yard line with 10 seconds
left in the half. A play later Johnson scampered to the right for the Newberg score. After
the extra point kick by Bryce Campbell, Newberg pulled within 14-7 at halftime.
Newberg capitalized on its momentum from the first half on its first drive in
the second half. After a pair of critical third-down conversions, Cole Rogers rushed to
the left 38 yards to the Tualatin 3-yard line. A play later senior Phil Zahn plunged in
for the touchdown. The Tigers were unable to tie the game when they failed the extra
point.
Tualatin then began working the Newberg defense down and the Timberwolves
found themselves at the Newberg 10-yard line. On third down Mignano hit Chase Lemon on a
screen pass and he rumbled untouched into the endzone. The extra point kick was missed,
which kept the Tigers within striking distance, down 20-13 with 4:33 remaining in the
third quarter.
On the ensuing possession, the Tigers got in the offensive groove. Newberg
senior Ian Roholt hauled in a 23-yard pass to put the Tigers at the Tualatin 19. A play
later, Rogers capped an eight-play, 64-yard drive with a rushing touchdown. With
Campbells extra point kick, the Tigers and Timberwolves stood in a 20-20 deadlock.
After both teams were forced to punt in the fourth, the Newberg defense took
over. Newbergs James Ringseth tackled Lemon for a nine-yard loss and batted the ball
down as Mignano attempted a pass on another play. After Tualatin failed to convert on
third down, it was forced to punt from its 15-yard line. Fortunately for Newberg, the snap
was long and went into the back of the endzone for a safety to put the Tigers ahead for
the first time at 22-20 with 6:04 remaining in the game.
Tualatin scored a touchdown to go ahead for good on a pass from Mignano to
Gibson with 2:19 left in the game. The Tigers return to action Friday with a 7 p.m. road
game at Forest Grove. |
