The season hasn’t been an easy one for the Newberg High School volleyball team.
After suffering five consecutive losses to start the season, the Tigers won their first match of the season Thursday with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 triumph at Woodburn.
“The girls played great,” said first-year NHS volleyball coach Jamie Schantin. “They played together; they continued to play well. They’re really disciplined.”
The Tigers came off a pair of losses Tuesday when Newberg fell at the hands of Silverton in four sets and Forest Grove in three sets in a three-way meet hosted by the Tigers.
“The girls played awesome against Silverton, but Silverton was just a really good team,” Schantin said. “The loss to Forest Grove was because something was taken out of us after that loss to Silverton.”
Last season, the Tigers started off their Pac-9 Conference record 8-0 and went on to win a share of the conference title with McMinnville. If the Tigers are to vie for a playoff spot this season they will have to turn things around quickly.
Schantin said the team knows what areas it must improve on in order to pickup more wins.
“After every game they have told me that what they need to work on,” she said. “I haven’t seen the same mistakes twice and they have done a good job of listening.”
The Tigers return to action this weekend at the Mt. Hood Invitational, regarded by some to be one of the top tournaments in the state. Newberg won’t have it easy. Number 3-ranked Jesuit is in its pool, as is Central Catholic.
Newberg returns to Pac-9 Conference play Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. home match against Tigard. The match is the first of four consecutive home matches for the Tigers, which ends Oct. 6 when Newberg hosts Dallas.
