Newberg looked to make it a game early, though. After stopping Tigard on its opening drive Newberg took the ball at its own 21 yard line with 9:03 remaining in the first quarter. Newberg immediately earned serious yardage thanks to running back Sam Schmitz when on a reverse he ran the ball 35 yards down to the Tigard 28.     Two plays later senior Jeremy Quinby, on a halfback option, heaved it to senior Ian Roholt for the game’s first touchdown with 5:33 remaining in the quarter.
Tigard wasted little time bouncing back. The Tigers’ Mitch McClelland capped off a long drive with a 15-yard scamper up the middle to tie the game with 3:17 remaining in the quarter.
From there on out it was all Tigard.
McClelland scored later in the quarter on a 25-yard up the middle with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter. The score put Newberg in a 14-7 hole, one it would never recover from.
After Newberg took over the ball and looked as if it would tie the game, junior quarterback Brad Johnson threw into coverage and saw his passed intercepted at the Tigard 2 yard line.
Tigard took over and Newberg’s defense looked as if it would hold when it forced Tigard into a third down and nine from deep in its own territory. But a roughing the passer penalty gave Tigard new life. They went on to complete a 98-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Joey Nobriga with 7:46 remaining in the half.
Tigard added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, along with two field goals in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Newberg returns to action Friday with a home game against Tualatin.
