The boys water polo team from Newberg takes home 17th out of 48 tams at the national competition

LOS ANGELES — The Chehalem boys 18-and-under water polo team capped off a 12-day trip to California by finishing 17th out of 48 teams Aug. 2 at the National Junior Olympics.
The team, which is essentially made up of the Newberg High School boys water polo team, was possibly the youngest team in the tournament with one player 18-years-old or older. In fact, Chehalem coach Jim McMaster started a 14-year-old during the tournament and said for Chehalem to perform so well at a national tournament is a major accomplishment.
“I think (17th place) was really good for having only one 18-year-old on our team,” he said. “With such a young group of guys, it was a good tournament for us. I thought the guys played tough. We didn’t have the full beards like some of the other guys on the other teams did, but they learned a lot and it was good competition.”
Chehalem opened the tournament with a 10-5 win over Eastside. Nate Bush led the way with four goals. Keary Schlactus added two goals and Jon Maxwell, Cray Rogers, Jordan Anderson and Craig Cheney scored one goal apiece.
Chehalem then fell 12-6 to the Chino Hills Area Water Polo (CHAWP) club, a team that finished in the top four at the tournament. Schlactus led Chehalem with five goals. Anderson scored one.
Chehalem rebounded for an 11-8 win over Marin at Mt. San Antonio College. Schlactus led Chehalem with five goals. Bush scored four and Rogers and Cheney each had a goal in the win.
Later that day, Chehalem suffered a disappointing 7-6 loss to Clovis.
“We should have won that one,” McMaster said. “It was a disappointing game. If we would have won that, it would have put us in the top eight.”
Rogers led Chehalem with three goals; Schlactus had two and Bush had one.
The squad returned to action to score a 10-3 win over the Breakers. Schlactus scored a team-high six goals in the victory. Bush scored two goals and Rogers and Anderson each scored a goal.
Later in the tournament, Chehalem faced Pacific (CCZ) and picked up an 11-8 win. Again, Schlactus led the way with five goals. Jon Maxwell and Rogers each scored two goals; Anderson and Austin McKenzie each scored once.
In the final game of the tournament, Chehalem knocked off the Waves, a team from Pepperdine, Calif., to take 17th. Schlactus scored five goals. The trio of Bush, Rogers and Anderson each had a goal in the victory.
The team will now rest before it prepares for the upcoming high school season. The Tigers enter the season as heavy favorites to win their second consecutive state title.
“This will be probably one of the best teams we’ve ever had in terms of talent and speed,” McMaster said.
Usually each year, McMaster will take a girls team for a trip out of the state, but due to a lack of commitments this summer, he was unable to form a team.
“I just didn’t see enough kids dedicate themselves,” he said. Tigers Morgan Jones and Adrienne Cheney played on a Washington team this summer.
Both the NHS girls and boys teams will start training sessions prior to the high school season. The girls team will begin practicing from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 21 at the Newberg High School track for land training; the boys team will practice from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the pool.
McMaster said he is also looking for more players to try out for the teams. Anyone interested may call McMaster at 503-209-2222.
