Six Newberg boys competed in a nationwide baseball tournament last week in Placentia, Calif.
The tournament, run by California Competitive Youth Baseball, was organized into age-based divisions for kids 10 to 14. The games ran from Aug. 1 to Aug. 6. Teams came from all over the country and from Canada.
The Oregon team was put together by Metro Baseball Academy, which organizes baseball clinics and camps and travels to competitions around the country.
The team was made up of boys from the greater Portland area and included six Newberg boys: Cody Danielson, Jake Burger, Zach Johnson, Jordan Danielson, Jordan Hodges and Tanner Hodges.
Cody Danielson caught and pitched for the 10-year-old division, which finished 3-5 and placed fourth.
Jordan Danielson and Jordan Hodges played in the 12-year-old division. Danielson pitched and played infield. Hodges played second base. The 12-year-old division finished 4-5 and placed fourth.
Jake Burger and Zach Johnson played in the 13-year-old division. Burger played second base and Johnson played center field. The 13-year-old division finished 5-2 and tied for third place.
Tanner Hodges played second base for the the 14-year-old division, which finished 3-3-1.
Johnson and Burger were invited to join the 13-year-old team one week before the tournament.
“They had just one week of practice, and (the team) just gelled really well,” said Shiryla Johnson, Zach Johnson’s mother.
“(Johnson and Burger) both hit around 300, brought in a lot of RBIs and just had a great time,” she said.
“Our team only gave up 10 runs ... in the seven games we played,” Zach Johnson said.
“It was pretty cool — I got to play with kids I’ve always played against because they had kids from Oregon City and West Linn (on our team),” he said.
Johnson and Burger both play baseball in Newberg through the Chehalem Park and Recreation District.
The tournament concluded with a clinic taught by Cal State Fullerton baseball players.
“They got to meet the players and get autographs and all that kind of stuff,” Shiryla Johnson said.
