REEDVILLE — It’s difficult to
count on anything when a state tournament comes around.
CR Woods had beaten Canby twice in regular season 14-4 and 21-16,
but suffered a narrow 3-2 loss Thursday in the first round of the
2004 Junior Federal State Tournament.
CR Woods coach Randy Miller said the team didn’t take Canby
lightly, despite the two previous wins over the squad.
“We knew they were playing well and that it would be a good
game,” he said.
CR Woods got on the board in the first inning. Austin Woods was
issued a walk before a Chad Dahl bunt moved Woods to second base.
Jordan Danielson drilled an RBI double for the game’s first score,
but CR Woods couldn’t extend its lead. With the bases loaded, Canby
converted the final out of the inning and escaped any additional CR
Woods runs.
In the fourth inning with one out, Matt Dufour doubled. With two
outs, Travis Teich hit a shallow infield single that scored Dufour,
but that would be all the runs CR Woods would get. Canby scored one
in the first, one in the fourth and the game-winner in the fifth to
claim the victory.
“We didn’t hit the ball like we’re able to,” Miller said. “We
should be able to score six or seven runs with our eyes closed. We
seemed a little tight.”
In fact, CR Woods tallied four hits with four runners left on base.
Canby recorded eight hits off Dahl and left six on base.
“I thought (Dahl) pitched a good game,” Miller said. “He held them
to three runs.”
CR Woods wasn’t eliminated from the double-elimination tournament,
however. The squad played Friday morning, but results were
unavailable as of press time.
“I wish we could just flip a switch and change it, but we just need
to hit better,” Miller said. “We have pitchers who are capable of
holding teams to two or three runs and if we do that, we should win
the game.”
