The Newberg 12-and-under baseball team found out how good a
championship team was Saturday.
Newberg suffered a 10-2 loss to the Lower Columbia A team at the
North Oregon Cal Ripken State Tournament in Dundee and was eliminated from the tournament.
The Lower Columbia team went on to win the tournament and earned a trip to the Northwest
regionals.
Jim Bascom, a Newberg assistant coach, said the team didnt perform at
the plate as well as it had in previous games.
We didnt hit as well as we expected so our offense
struggled, Bascom said. Mostly, in our regular league play, we dont see
a lot of breaking ball pitches and we saw breaking balls like weve never seen
before.
Newberg fell 11-3 to West Linn in the teams opening game Friday, but
then rebounded to score a 7-3 triumph over the Lower Columbia B team. Sam
Petrie pitched five innings and gave up two hits, two runs and struck out three in the
win. From the plate, Newberg tallied seven hits. Petrie had two of them, including a
three-run home run in the fourth inning that broke a 2-2 deadlock.
On Saturday, Newberg fell to Seaside 8-3. Cody Bonner and Taylor Hart
combined in the Newberg pitching effort. Offensively, Newberg was led by Ray Gardner, who
went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
They scored five in the second inning and we never recovered,
Bascom said.
Later Saturday, Newberg played the Lower Columbia A team. Newberg
tallied two hits by Hart and Tucker Bascom.
