The Abby’s American Legion AAA baseball
team’s season ended Saturday with an 11-10 loss at Sunset in the
league playoffs.
In
the finale of the three-game series, Abby’s held a 2-1 lead after
the first inning then scored five runs in the second to assume a 7-3
lead.
“We were feeling pretty good at that point,” said assistant coach
David Case, who took over temporarily for head coach Frank Baumholtz.
But in the third inning, Sunset rallied and scored six runs to
seize a 9-7 lead. After Sunset picked up another run in the fifth,
Abby’s Levi Fletcher led the sixth inning off with a solo home run
to pull the Tigers within 10-8 before Zach Caffall’s two-run home
run in the seventh tied the game.
But in the bottom half of the seventh, Sunset scored the winning
run to take the victory and the series.
Despite the loss, Case was happy with the team’s performance.
“It showed how much we battled back,” Case said. “To take the lead
and then lose it and then tie it up, it bodes well because we’re a
young team. It was disappointing, but encouraging because they
battled.”
The Tigers were able to force the third and deciding game after an
8-7 home win Friday over Sunset.
The Tigers assumed a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning off a two-run
home run to left field by Taylor Burrows. However, Sunset rallied
again and held a 5-4 lead, assisted by a three-RBI double by DJ
Johnson in the sixth, to start the seventh inning when Nick Reynolds
hit a solo home run with two outs to tie the game 5-5.
The two teams traded scores until the ninth when an RBI single by
Ryan Wilson gave the Tigers the victory.
“For (Wilson) to get that game-winning hit was huge, as was the home
run by (Burrows) and the home run by (Reynolds),” Case said.
Matt Twenge went 6 2/3 innings on the mound for the Tigers.
Mitchell Sturdevant came in and pitched the rest of the way to earn
the win. |
