Levi Fletcher pitched a three-hit complete game and the Abby’s American Legion AAA baseball team used 10 hits to score a 7-2 victory against McMinnville.
“We did a lot of things really well and that’s really positive,” Abby’s coach Frank Baumholtz said. “(Fletcher) threw outstanding. He had really good stuff, we hit the ball well and were aggressive on the bases.”
After Abby’s scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Tigers broke open the game in the second with five runs. Spencer Hales hit an RBI double to center field and later scored on a wild pitch by McMinnville pitcher Alex Kilmer. With Abby’s ahead 3-0, Nick Reynolds delivered a sharp liner for an RBI double down the third base line. Brett Case capped the inning with a two-RBI single up the middle to give Abby’s a commanding 6-0 lead.
“As soon as he hit that ball, I turned around to one of our coaches and told him that in spring ball we didn’t get that hit,” Baumholtz said. “We didn’t get that timely hit. We pitched, played defense and got hits at times, but just didn’t get it when we needed it. ... We’ve been doing things in pockets, but we’re getting over the hump by putting all the little things together.”
With Abby’s first win of the season, Baumholtz said a win like Thursday’s could turn the tide of the Tigers. Most of the players on the team were also on the Newberg High School varsity baseball team, also coached by Baumholtz, that finished with an overall record of 7-19 and in last place in the Pacific Conference (3-12).
“All along, we’ve been talking about it being about pitching, playing defense and getting timely hits, but we were losing the one- and two-run ballgames,” Baumholtz said. “We kept telling them we’re right there and just need to put all the pieces together.”
Abby’s fell 7-6 at Grant in the opening game of the season and a 4-3 loss at Aloha. The Tigers seemed one play away from winning both games.
“We had all the right pieces put together tonight to show them that that’s it right there,” Baumholtz said. “Tonight is supposed to be how it is every day and we haven’t had an opportunity to experience that because of our inconsistency.”
Matt Twenge went 3 for 3 in the win over McMinnville. Case was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI. Reynolds also added two hits for the Tigers.
On Wednesday, the Tigers pounded out 13 hits — nine of them doubles — but the squad fell 11-9 at home to Canby.
“We just hit the heck out of the ball,” Baumholtz said.
Case led Abby’s by going 3 for 4 with three RBI. Fletcher batted 3 for 4 with two RBI and Trent Boston was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Reynolds added an RBI double in the sixth. Evan Windsor and Tyler Church also both had an RBI double for Abby’s.
Mitchell Sturdevant went four innings on the mound for Abby’s and gave up seven hits and a walk. Twenge pitched two relief innings and struck out one and gave up two hits and two walks before Boston pitched the seventh and struck out one and gave up a walk.
The Tigers return to action today (Saturday) with an 11 a.m. double-header at Glencoe. The first game is a league contest; the second game is not.
