At least Abby’s picked up a win Thursday before it could be handed a
loss.
Abby’s defeated Wilson 7-5 at home Wednesday in the first game of a
double-header. With Abby’s down 12-5 in the second game, only half
of the lights on the field worked, forcing the game to come to a
premature end in the fifth inning.
In the first game, Abby’s Grady Winder scored the game’s first run
on a passed ball in the first inning to give the Tigers a slim 1-0
lead. In the second inning, pitcher Kyle Dahl helped his own effort
by hitting an inside the park home run. But in the third, Wilson
scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Abby’s rallied in the bottom
half of the inning on a Darrell Huffman double to left before Jordan
Guedon hit a sacrifice RBI to tie the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Abby’s, which had been offensively
struggling the entire season, notched another run when Dahl stole
home on a passed ball.
After Wilson scored two runs in the fifth to seize a 5-4
lead, Jacob Greber hit an RBI single to right field to tie the game.
Abby’s continued to work its magic in the final two innings when the
Tigers strung together five hits in a row to produce not only two
runs, but the win.
“It was one of our better hitting games,” said Abby’s coach
Frank Baumholtz. “That’s what we’ve been looking for is bunching all
the hits together.”
The Tigers return to action today with a double-header at
home against the Eugene Challengers. The first game is set for a 1
p.m. start time. The Tigers return to league play Monday with a 7
p.m. contest at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.
