Ten games into the summer season the Abby’s American Legion AAA
baseball team picked up its first win on Monday.
Chance Howard threw a two-hit complete game in a 4-1 win over
Forest Grove. He struck out five and walked two, while the Abby’s
offense responded with a run in each of the second, third, fourth
and fifth innings. Jacob Greber and Chris Anderson had an RBI
each in the game.
Abby’s coach Frank Baumholtz stopped short of saying the monkey was
off the team’s back.
“I guess you could say that, but we were more interested in playing
well and not making the errors that we have in the games
previously,” he said. “We’re interested in doing things right and
not beating ourselves. We were able to do the little things well and
(Howard) threw well.”
With the first win under the team’s belt, Baumholtz said the Tigers
feel good.
“We’ve been right there,” he said. “We’ve been one hit or one error
from winning a game. We’re playing good consistent defense now and I
think they like coming to the ballpark everyday. They have a
competitive nature and they’re going to keep battling.”
The Tigers tallied eight hits in the game against Forest Grove.
“We didn’t have one guy who carried us,” Baumholtz said. “It was a
team effort and that’s the kind of team we are.”
The Tigers came into the contest fresh off the D.R.S Memorial
Tournament at Aloha High School June 17 through Sunday. The Tigers
fell to Westview 12-3 Friday and then suffered a 6-5 setback to
Barlow Saturday.
The loss to Barlow especially hurt because it was a game that
Abby’s seemed to have wrapped up. Down 4-3, Greber hit a solo home
run to tie the game in the sixth. After a Darrell Huffman single in
the seventh, Greber laced an RBI single to right field to give
Abby’s a 5-4 advantage. But Barlow bounced back in
the bottom of the seventh and scored two runs to win the game.
On Sunday, the Tigers fell in the final day of the tournament, this
time to Aloha 7-4.
“We weren’t able to make the plays defensively and it was
frustrating because they were giving us outs and we weren’t able to
capitalize,” Baumholtz said.
The Tigers return to action today (Wednesday) with a 5 p.m. home
doubleheader against Wilson.
