Buck's win, save propels OSU Beavers

Dallas Buck earned the biggest win and save of his young college career during the weekend.
On Saturday, the Oregon State University sophomore pitched 7 2/3 innings in the opener of a three-game series against the University of Southern California. The teams were playing in the NCAA super regionals. The Beavers scored a 10-4 victory.
Buck got off to a shaky start. He gave up a base hit to Billy Hart to load the bases with one out in the first inning before walking Baron Frost to give Southern California, which committed eight errors, the early lead. He hit the next batter, Hector Estrella, square in the back with a pitch to surrender another run.
Buck eventually settled down, allowing four runs on seven hits throughout the game. He walked five and struck out two.
“It was definitely a roller-coaster,” Buck said. “It was a good atmosphere and I had a lot of adrenaline at the beginning of the game and I couldn’t really find the zone like I’d like to. Then as the game went on, I got more comfortable and settled in a little bit.”
After the Beavers gave up an 8-3 lead Sunday and lost 9-8 in extra innings, the teams met up again Monday with the winner receiving a bid to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
OSU rushed out to another lead early, only to watch USC rally. After USC tied the game 7-7 in the sixth inning. OSU bounced back and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh.
With two out in the eighth, OSU turned to Buck, who hadn’t come out of the bullpen all season. Buck got Hart to fly out to right-center to end the eighth inning before he retired the Trojans on seven pitches in the ninth.
“Obviously, we weren’t planning on using Dallas Buck today, but when it got to the point he’s got his uniform on, his hat on, he’s warming up in the bullpen, it’s pretty hard to shut him down,” said OSU coach Pat Casey said.
Buck has played an integral role for the Beavers this season. He is 12-1 with a 2.12 ERA and factored in OSU’s first postseason appearance since 1986.
The Beavers will now head to the College World Series June 17-27. Buck is the expected starter for the Beavers when they kick off the tournament Saturday against top-ranked Tulane.
