There just wasnt much competition for the Newberg High School
boys and girls track teams Thursday.
The boys drilled Woodburn 122-22; the girls were even more dominant, picking
up a 122-11 win.
It was kind of sad for (Woodburn) because you dont want to see a
team down that far, said NHS coach Monte Bradley.
Despite the relative lack of competition, Bradley said he was happy with how
both NHS teams performed.
For the lowkeyness of the meet, our kids did well because there was no
need for adrenaline, he said. We mixed some kids up and put them in some
different events so the score isnt a result of us pouring it on or anything.
Newbergs Jon Styles won both the 100-meter race and 200 with
times of 11.68 and 23.6, respectively. Jason Anderson finished second in the 100 (11.79)
while Peter Keyser won the 400 (50.7) and took second in the 200 (23.71). Nick Bellisario
tied his seasons best in the 800 (2:01.1) to claim the win and Sage Canaday
(2:06.62) finished second, followed by Vertin Alvarez (2:10.18). Alvarez notched a
seasons best 4:12.5 on his way to winning the 1,500. Bellisario took second
(4:17.7).
Grant Piros swept the hurdles competitions for the Tigers, winning the 110
high hurdles (16.0) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.9). The NHS relay teams also came
out victorious: the 4 x 100 team won with a time of 45.0 and the 4 x 400 team posted a
3:49.0.
Newberg spread the wealth in the throwing competition. Sean Carey won the
shot put (45-6), Corey Yates won the discus event (138-7) and Phil Zahn posted a win in
the javelin (192-0).
Ben Barber won the high jump competition (5-8) and Greg Salmon captured the
victory in the pole vault (12-0). Tyler Dexter took second in the pole vault (11-0),
giving the Tigers a 1-2 punch in the event at the upcoming district meet.
(Dexters) been working really, really hard for two years and
hes beginning to jump well right now, Bradley said.
Brad Johnson took home victories in the long jump (20-5.75) and the triple
jump (41-6.75).
On the girls side, Holly Mishler claimed second in the 800 (2:45.4) title and
Meghan Leonard picked up a victory in the 3,000 (10:28.3). Sara Zahler posted a pair of
wins in the 300 hurdles (50.82) and the 100 hurdles (17.7).
Paloma Frutos won the shot put competition (32-11), while Jessica Hampton
took home top honors in the discus (102-4). Rachel Yurkovich continued her unbeaten streak
in the Pac-9 Conference with another win in the javelin (152-8). Whitney Hall was
victorious in the long jump (15-10.5). Vanessa Schmitz scored the triumph in the triple
jump for the Tigers (32-4).
Holly Winter claimed the victory in the shot put (32-1.5) while Maggie Warner
finished first in the pole vault (7-0). Joede Leavitt posted a pair of wins. Her time of
13.2 in the 100 and time of 27.2 in the 200 were both fast enough to claim wins.
With the wins, the boys team improved 5-0 in the conference and the girls are
2-3. Both teams end the conference season next week hosting Dallas and Silverton Tuesday. |
