Cecil Williams has resigned from his post as
St. Paul High School volleyball coach.
On April 21, Williams tended in his resignation, St. Paul athletic
director Jay Phillips said.
Williams took over for Doug Keightley in 2002 after Keightley had
served eight years as coach. This past season, Williams guided the
Bucks to a fourth-place finish at the Casco League district
tournament.
Williams is currently teaching first-grade on a part-time basis in
St. Paul, Phillips said.
“He has applications in at other schools (to be a teacher),
Phillips said. “The St. Paul administration has appreciated the work
he’s put in the volleyball program over the years. He put in a lot
of energy and he has a bright future. Wherever he teaches or
coaches, he’s going to do well.”
Whomever will be the next coach will inherit one of the state’s
most talented teams. The Bucks lost just two players — Dani Davidson
and Veronica Schmitz — to graduation and return several key players
from this past season’s team, including Erika Wilmes, Katlyn
McKillip, Julie Drescher, April Ackerman, Brittani Brown, Katelin
Davidson, Michelle Wilson, Janelle Drescher and others.
“There are numbers there,” Phillips said. “We definitely have
numbers.”
Phillips said he has begun advertising the position in several
publications and is eager to hire someone. However, he added there
is no closing date for the job.
“We’re just going to hire the best available candidate,” he said.
“We do not have a teaching position tied to it, though. It’s always
difficult for all schools with a lot of off-staff coaches. I wish we
had a teaching position, but we just don’t right now.” |
