With the three weakest teams in the Pac-9 Conference left on its schedule, the Newberg High School boys track team could be poised for a dual meet title.
But Newberg isn’t assured of anything, even though it picked up a 108-36 win Wednesday at Forest Grove.
“It was an overmatched meet,” said NHS coach Monte Bradley.
   No kidding.
Senior Vertin Alvarez set a new personal record of 8:52.3 in the 3,000-meter run in Wednesday’s meet. The time solidifies him as second in the conference behind teammate Sage Canaday.
Junior Grant Piros won both the 110 high hurdles (15.7) and 300 intermediate hurdles (43.5).
Senior Peter Keyser notched a conference-leading time of 22.2 in the 200 for the win. Keyser also won the 100 in 11.2.
Junior Greg Salmon set a personal best in the pole vault with a height of 12-feet, a week after he no-heighted at 9-0.
“That was a big breakthrough for him and it also gives us a   point-getter at the district meet,” Bradley said.
Grant Lappi set a personal best in the shot put (46-10) on his way to the win, while junior Brad Johnson’s mark of 19-10.25 in the long jump proved sufficient for the win. Junior Alex Wolff scored a win in the javelin (168-5), followed by Phil Zahn (166-10) and Chris Fanger (164-9).
The Newberg girls team suffered a 73-70 loss to the Vikings. It was Newberg’s third loss in a dual meet by less than five points this season.
“They’re the best 1-3 team in the state,” Bradley said.
Bradley said the Tigers were without pole vaulter Maggie Warner, who could have gained a few more points for the team. He said absences on the girls team has hurt it during the course of the season.
“We just don’t get over the hump because it seems like we always have somebody missing
