The Tigers (9-2 overall, 6-1 Pac-9 Conference) had become accustomed to playing teams where the matches were relaxed. On Thursday, however, the anxiety was about as high as it could get.
“Tualatin didn’t like losing to us; they never do,” said Newberg coach Dave Brown. “The Tualatin kids, I don’t know what it is, but they don’t go out of their way to be friendly and that adds to the tenseness.”
Despite the tense atmosphere the Tigers, who won 11-7 in sets and 94-74 in games, produced the win over the youthful Timberwolves.
“Tualatin’s really solid and they have only one senior on the team and they’ll be easily the team to beat next year,” Brown said.
At No. 1 singles, Newberg’s Noah Palmer lost 6-4, 6-4, in what Brown said was “one of his best matches” after suffering an injury a month ago.
“He played really well and he’s starting to play like he did about a month ago before he got banged up,” Brown said.
At No. 2 singles, Newberg’s Ethan Headley captured a 6-4, 6-0, triumph, while at No. 3 singles, Newberg’s Andy Carsley scored a 6-2, 6-4, win.
“He’s playing really well,” Brown said of Carsley. “He gets better by the day. He just wants to play. It’s rubbing off too.”
At No. 4 singles, Newberg’s Grant Williams, coming off a week of flu, lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
“I think if he would have been really healthy, he would have won in two sets, but Grant goes out there and gives it everything he’s got, no matter what,” Brown said.
At No. 1 doubles, Newberg’s team of Ryan McBride and Gabe Caruso suffered their first loss in conference play, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2 tie-breaker).
“It’s kind of a blessing because it ticks them off and it will make them fired up now,” Brown said.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of Mario Vivanco and Jeremy Quinby won 6-3, 6-3. Brown said he has high hopes for the duo.
“If they keep staying steady, I think they have a chance to get seeded in the top eight at districts,” he said.
Tommy Stock and Tyler Brown used their serves to capture a 6-1, 6-3, victory in the No. 3 doubles match.
The team of Jeremy Abe and Justin Roberts, at No. 4 doubles, picked up a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, win to round out the Tiger victory.
The Tigers return to action Tuesday in their last conference matchup of the season before heading to the district tournament May 14-16.

Notes:
In junior varsity action, Newberg went 2-2 with the Timberwolves.
At No. 1 doubles, the team of Tony Goff and Stephan Pierson won 8-5; at No. 2, Adam Osborne and Devin Johnson won 8-4. At No. 3 Newberg’s team of Justin Pierson and Jeff Frentress lost 8-3, while the tandem of Parker Zabel and Matt Madjecki fell 8-5 at No. 4.
