The Newberg High School girls track
team won its dual meet Wednesday with Tigard and improved to 2-0 in
the Pac-9 Conference with a 100-45 home victory.
The relay team of Alysha Beck, Melinda Lee, Whitney Hall and Elise
Larrett ran to a time of 51.5 seconds in the 4 x 100-meter race to
come away with the win. Larrett, a freshman, claimed victories in
the 100 (13.36) and 200 (28.29).
Beck, a freshman, placed second in the 100 hurdles (16.65) while
teammate Sara Zahler placed third in the event (17.12). Beck also
narrowly defeated Zahler in the 300 at 50.07; Zahler’s time was
50.08.
Mandy Craig picked up victories in the 1,500 (5:21.2) and 3,000
(11:51.7). Whitney Hall recorded wins in the triple jump with a
personal best of 32-feet, 3.5-inches. In the long jump, her
mark of 16-8.5 was sufficient to edge teammate Michelle Hildreth
(16-6.5).
Freshman Emily Craig won the high jump (4-8), while senior Rachel
Yurkovich recorded a season’s best throw in the javelin (157-0).
“The girls team is solid,” said NHS coach Monte Bradley.
“It’s a pretty good group of girls. It’s been awhile since we’ve had
a really balanced team.”
On the boys side, Newberg fell 87-58. Senior Cyrus Hostetler won
the javelin event (186-8), followed by the second-place throw of
Brad Johnson (175-8).
Greg Salmon had a one-foot personal best in the pole vault with a height
of 13-6. Bradley said he is looking for a good season from the
senior.
“He’s having a very good year and has put himself in a position to
be in the top of the league this year,” Bradley said.
NHS senior Tyler Dexter had a personal best of 11-6 in the pole
vault to place third for the Tigers. “It was kind of a breakthrough
for him,” Bradley said. “He could do really, really well this year.”
Corey
Yates won the discus event with a season’s best mark of 153-5.
“This was, by far, his best performance this early in the year,”
Bradley said.
Junior Sean Carey placed second in the shot with a personal best of
51-6, 2.5 inches short of Tigard senior Dan Lewis.
Overall, Bradley was happy with Newberg’s performance.
“We had a pretty good meet,” he said. “Tigard isn’t overly strong,
but they just had people in all of the events. We’ve had some
injuries that have set us back.”
Newberg returns to action today (Saturday) with the Mike Kostrba
Invitational at 10 a.m. at Sandy High School.
