HILLSBORO – The Newberg High School
boys tennis team used a 55-41 advantage in games won to pick up a
win here Wednesday.
In a match that was shortened to pro sets because of rain,
Hillsboro swept all four singles matches, but the Tigers won all
four doubles matches, outscoring Hillsboro by a combined 32-8.
“That was a good match,” said Dave Brown, NHS coach. “Like usual,
we’re tough in doubles and struggled in singles, but we’ll get
better at singles.”
In singles, Newberg’s Ian McGregor lost 8-5 to Pouher Her at No. 1
and Hillsboro’s Roland Lee picked up an 8-2 win over Jeff Frentress.
NHS sophomore Matt Jorgensen fell to Jeff Trousdale 8-4, while
Newberg’s Mark Winn lost a close 9-7 match to Vo Edmondson.
“(McGregor) played pretty well and (Frentress) and (Jorgensen)
struggled a little bit (in their) confidence more than anything, I
think,” Brown said. “(Winn) was up and I thought he was going to win
it, but I think he’s doing really well.”
In doubles, Newberg’s No. 1 team of Tommy Stock and Tyler Brown
scored an 8-1 victory over Bryan Blankena and Vee Her. Stock and
Brown lost the first game, but rebounded to win the final eight.
At No. 2, Jared Hansen and Stephen Pearson shut out Wilson Tsang
and Javier Tejero 8-0. At No. 3, Newberg’s Jonny Stock and Drew
Steindl scored an 8-6 victory over Spencer Cleland and Dao Her.
“That was the best doubles match, for sure,” Brown said. “It was
wet and the balls were heavy.”
At No. 4, Newberg’s Caleb Lamoreaux and Bobby Hafner won 8-1 over
Jack Bxrowzak and Jared Bradley.
Overall, Brown was happy with Newberg’s performance.
“Two good things happened,” he said. “First, we got the match in
because of the weather and the second thing that was great was that
Mark Winn stepped up. He’s been a real surprise for us. I think it’s
going to be tough to get him out of (singles) now. He’s got a nice
backhand, he hustles and is athletic and is really coachable. Plus,
he just loves to play and is intense and has really good
sportsmanship.” |
