George Fox rushed to a big lead in the
first half Friday and defeated Gustavus Adolphus 61-47 in the second
round of the NCAA Division III basketball tournament.
The host Bruins (19-6) led 12-3 early on a short jumper by guard
Jaime Hubka with 15:19 remaining. The Gusties pulled within 20-15
midway through the half before George Fox senior guard Robin Taylor
heated up. With 5:28, Taylor drilled a three-pointer to give the
Bruins a 30-17 lead. After a steal by George Fox’s Tiffany Behary,
Katy Campbell’s pass found Taylor who hit her second three-pointer
to give the Bruins a 33-19 lead.
With 3:55, Taylor, who scored 13 first-half points, hit her third
three-pointer of the half as the George Fox lead ballooned to 36-19.
The bucket proved to be the last points either team scored as the
Bruins held a 36-19 halftime lead.
As well as the George Fox offense played, its defense was nearly as
good. The Bruins effectively neutralized Jess Vadnais, the Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year, and limited
the left-handed junior guard scored two points on 1 for 7 shooting
in the half.
The Bruins extended their lead to 20 points in the second half when
Hubka’s free throw gave the Bruins a 45-25 lead with 13:33
remaining, but they couldn’t put the Gusties (22-6) away. Katie
Layman scored inside with three minutes remaining; Gustavus was
within 54-45. But after Melissa Marek-Farris hit two free throws
with 2:46 to play, Behary’s three-pointer from the top of the key at
1:22 sealed the win.
GFU coach Scott Rueck said the Bruins wanted to take advantage of
the help defense the Gusties played.
“The game plan was to go inside-out and make them pay for leaving
our shooters open and we did that,” he said.
Taylor led all scorers with 20 points. Campbell narrowly missed a
triple-double with nine points, eight assists and 11 rebounds.
Behary added 12 points for the Bruins. Vadnais ended the game with
14 points for the Gusties.
In the earlier game Friday, the University of Puget Sound upset No.
12-ranked McMurry College 69-57 to set up the fourth meeting of the
season between the Loggers and the Bruins at 7:30 p.m. tonight
(Saturday). |
