PORTLAND — The Newberg High School
softball team collected its first win of the season, a 10-4 triumph
over Franklin at the Central Catholic Spring Break Invitational
Tournament.
Newberg recorded 13 hits in the first game of the day. The Tigers
jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Carrie Maerz
drilled a two-RBI double to center field before Casey Bearden’s RBI
single later in the inning.
Newberg tacked on four more runs in the fourth when a Megan
Cheslock hit led to a Franklin error that allowed a Tiger run to
score. Later, another Franklin error gave way to a Newberg run
before Maerz delivered another two-RBI double, this time down the
right field line to give the Tigers a commanding 7-0 lead.
In the fifth, Lauren Casey’s RBI single put the Tigers up 8-2
before a Shelby Douglas RBI single to center field in the sixth and
a Bearden RBI single up the middle closed out the scoring for the
Tigers.
Bearden pitched the Tigers to the win. She gave up six hits, struck
out two and walked three.
Newberg came into the game off 2-1 losses to both Glencoe and
Aloha.
“The girls played well,” said Newberg coach Kelly Johnson. “We woke
the bats up. In our first game, it was a little rough at the plate.
In the second game, it got a little better and the third one got
even better.”
In the second game Monday, Newberg took on Parkrose and got out to
a 1-0 lead after Reonna McKibben scored on a wild pitch in the
second inning. After Parkrose scored twice in the second and
once in the third, Newberg rallied in the fourth. With the bases
loaded, Nicole Davis hit an RBI single to left field. After a
Parkrose error led to another Newberg run, the Tigers tied the game
3-3. Later in the inning, Davis scored on a wild pitch to give the
Tigers a 4-3 advantage.
Parkrose added three runs in the fifth, followed by three more in
the sixth to secure the win.
“We had a nice comeback in the fifth, but playing two games in a
row and having the same pitcher on the mound in the second game ...
it was her first game on the mound, we had a freshman behind the
plate and a couple of girls who need some game experience,” Johnson
said. “We battled, though. We just struggled with hitting, unlike
how we did in the first game.”
Newberg has had several of its games rained out this season,
something the Tigers have had a tough time dealing with, especially
because the team is young. Game experience is vital, Johnson said.
“I think a lot of teams are in our position — a lot of rainouts,”
she said. “But spring break is a nice time where you can get four
games in two days and get the game experience we’re going to need.” |
