The St. Paul High School girls basketball team held Open Bible Christian School to four points in the first three quarters Friday and rolled to a 45-13 road victory.
The Bucks opened the game with a 9-0 first quarter lead and extended that to 21-4 by halftime en route to the win. They shut out the Panthers in the third quarter, as well, leading 29-4 heading into the final period.
“Defensively, we played pretty well, and actually we played pretty well on both sides,” coach Michael Murphy said.
Michelle Wilson and Jenna Schneider each scored 14; Jordan Murphy had 12.
“Those girls are good,” said Open Bible coach Mike Wise. “They have an outside shot, they have an inside game, they have their press down and their defense was unbelievable.”
It was the Panthers’ second lopsided loss of the season to the Bucks, ranked fourth in the state. Wise said the guard play of St. Paul proved tough to penetrate.
“We didn’t get within five feet of the basket,” he said.  “Their guards kept us out of our offense.”
Wise said he was happy with his team’s defense for a 12-minute stretch of the game, but once the team’s defense began to wear down, St. Paul took advantage.
Down 25 points at the end of the third quarter, Wise said the Panthers were finally able to gain some offensive momentum in the final quarter.
“The positive thing is that when they put their bottom half (of the lineup) in, for about two or three minutes, our girls were able to compete,” he said.
Despite the loss, Wise said it didn’t diminish the playoff hopes of the Panthers, who are battling for one of the final four playoff spots.
“Our real target was the next four games,” he said. “We realized that we didn’t match up real well with St. Paul.  We didn’t really put a whole lot of emphasis on how we were going to play St. Paul. We wanted to concentrate on Country Christian and Southwest this week.”
While many teams with losing records don’t qualify for the playoffs in leagues around the state, Wise said his 4-9 Panthers would like to think they still have a chance.
“When you’re 4-9, you kind of wonder if you are in the hunt,” he said.
Wise said he thinks the Panthers have a shot at defeating Country Christian and Southwest this week before facing Perrydale and Willamette Valley Christian next week. He added if the Panthers win two, possibly three, of the final four games, they could make the district playoffs for the first time in school history.
