Portland Waldorf’s Simon Muir-Filene hit a
three-pointer with six seconds to play Friday to hand the Open Bible
Christian School boys basketball team a 46-44 loss.
Muir-Filene
hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter and single-handedly
brought Portland Waldorf back into the game. With 59 seconds, he hit
a three-pointer to put Portland Waldorf up 43-42. Open Bible’s
Darrick Swartout gave the Panthers the lead back when dribbled
through the Portland Waldorf defense and scored with 46 seconds
left. The Panthers had a chance to pad their lead, but Phil Church
missed a pair of free throws with 14 seconds to play.
After a timeout, Muir-Filene connected on the game-winning
three-pointer.
The Panthers, up 34-28 to start the fourth quarter, had one last
chance. Open Bible ran an out-of-bound play to get Swartout the
ball, but time ran off the clock before the ball was inbounded. With
one more attempt, Stephen Pearson’s toss hit the gym ceiling, giving
the ball, and the game, to Portland Waldorf.
It was Open Bible’s second consecutive two-point defeat. It came
off a 44-42 home loss Tuesday to C.S. Lewis Academy.
“This loss was more frustrating than the C.S. Lewis game,” said
Open Bible coach Dan Busch. “It’s tough losing those kinds of games,
especially when things you cannot control are partially responsible.
We have to take some responsibility, like missing six free throws in
the fourth, and 12 for the game, but there were some calls in the
game that just didn’t make any sense.”
Open Bible played the final two minutes without its leading scorer
— senior Micah Gilday. He was called for his fifth infraction in
what Busch said was a “clear offensive foul” on Portland Waldorf.
Gilday was limited to five points and five rebounds, but Pearson
stepped in and hit six of seven from the field and six of seven from
the free-throw line to lead the Panthers with 18 points.
“They chased (Gilday) all night which opened things for (Pearson)
and the shots were falling,” Busch said. “We worked hard in
practice on guys looking for gaps in their zone when (Gilday) had
the ball because we knew they would be chasing him.”
Church added seven points and three rebounds for the Panthers.
Swartout chipped in six points. Aaron Elder added five points and
John Daugherty contributed three points and six rebounds. |
