Big fourth quarter lifts Panthers to win |

ALOHA — Open Bible Christian School used a 21-4 run in
the fourth quarter to secure a 49-36 win over the Sherwood freshman
team at a two-day tournament at Life Christian School.
After the Panthers raced out to a quick nine-point lead in the
first quarter, Sherwood assumed control of the game with a 19-7
scoring advantage in the second quarter.
“It was a tough second quarter,” said Open Bible coach Mike Braden.
“I think we struggled with our defense a little bit. We also were
getting the shots we wanted, but they just weren’t falling.”
Open Bible pulled within four by the end of the third quarter, but
the Bowmen tried to hang with the Panthers in the fourth.
That was until Sara Gardner came back into the game.
Gardner picked up her fourth foul less than 90 seconds into the
second half and sat out the rest of the third quarter. At the start
of the fourth, she returned to the lineup and proved to be the
difference in the game, scoring 10 points in the final stanza.
“We started to make a few shots at the end of third and everything
just kind of came together in the fourth,” Braden said.
Gardner’s steal and bucket with 5:58 remaining gave the Panthers
the 35-34 lead, their first advantage since early in the second
quarter. Gardner added another hoop a minute later before being
fouled with 2:37 remaining. Gardner hit the first and missed the
second, but teammate Sarah Wood came up with the rebound and score
to give the Panthers a 46-36 lead.
“She was huge,” Braden said of Gardner.
Gardner led the Panthers with 18 points and Bekah Penrose chipped
in 10. Jessica Meade added nine. Both Wood and Jenny Manson, who hit
three-pointers in the third and fourth quarters, scored six points
apiece.
The game was Open Bible’s first since it defeated C.S. Lewis
Academy Dec. 16. Because Open Bible only has six players on its
roster, it presents a challenge to run drills during practices.
“I think the layoff hurt us a little bit, like actually getting
back into the intensity of playing another team because in practice
— you can’t do that with six players,” Braden said.
With just six players, foul trouble will be crucial to the success
of the Panthers. In the team’s win over the Watchmen, two players
fouled out with more than five minutes remaining in the game. Open
Bible was forced to play with four players the rest of the way and
still managed to win.
“The girls are figuring out that they’re going to have to play
according to how many fouls they’ve got,” Braden said. “Like if they
have four fouls, they’re going to have to lay off a little bit.”
The Panthers improved to 5-3 with the victory and returned to
action Friday against Life Christian (results were unavailable at
press time). |
