PHOENIX, Ariz. — Aaron Schmick sank two free throws with one-tenth of a second remaining to ice George Fox’s 82-78 upset of Ramapo College in the opening round Saturday of the Cactus Jam Division III Tournament at Phoenix College.
The Bruins trailed by one at the half, 38-37, to the Roadrunners from Mahwah, N.J., ranked 35th in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, but took a 15-point lead midway through the second half. The Roadrunners rallied, however, cutting the lead to 79-78 with less than a minute to play.
The Bruins’ Chris Parker, who had not missed a free throw all season, was fouled with 20 seconds left. He missed the first of a two-shot foul, but made the second for an 80-78 Bruin lead. Ramapo’s all-American guard, Charles Ransom, then misfired on a potential game-winning 3-pointer, the Bruins grabbed the rebound, and Schmick was fouled and hit his two freebies with one tick left on the clock to secure the win.
Schmick finished with 27 points, including a 5-of-8 game from 3-point range. Mark Gayman added 17 points and 12 rebounds, his second double-double this season and 10th of his career. Bryan Wadlow added 12 points for the Bruins.
The luck ran out for the Bruins Monday when Wartburg handed GFU a 69-66 loss. In a see-saw affair that saw 10 ties and 16 lead changes, it was a pair of 3-pointers by Jason Steege late in the game that enabled Wartburg to squeeze past the Bruins in a semifinal duel of the tournament.
Schmick finished with 16 points to lead the Bruins, while Wadlow and Ben Melvin scored 12 each and Gayman had 11. Gayman and Scott Szalay had seven rebounds each as the Bruins edged the Knights on the boards 30-29. Schmick and Gayman had four assists apiece, and Schmick collected four steals.
   George Fox slipped to 3-4.
The Bruins faced a familiar foe, Yamhill County rival Linfield College, in the tournament’s third-place game Tuesday. Results were unavailable as of press time.
