Blame it
on Thanksgiving. Blame it on the turkey. Whatever it was, George Fox
was in a bit of a haze early Tuesday before eventually finding its
groove to score a 78-63 home men’s basketball win over Northwest
Christian College.
Aaron
Schmick and Chris Parker scored 17 points apiece and Scott Szalay
posted his third double-double in as many games with 10 points and
13 rebounds.
The Bruins potted the Beacons an early 10-2 lead. Jesse Taylor’s
three-pointer started the game for NWCC and then added a jumper
before a Jesse Meeks three-pointer and a Josh Harbert bucket. The
Bruins, meanwhile, missed three layups, a jumper and committed a
turnover in their first five possessions.
GFU coach Mark Sundquist said he thinks the holiday break didn’t
help the Bruins.
“We gave (players) three days off for Thanksgiving and I’ve never
done that before and I probably won’t do that again,” he said. “We
just kind of came out flat. We had no energy against a good team.”
The Bruins finally got going when Schmick and Ben Melvin hit a
three-point and a two-point basket to forge a 12-12 tie with 14
minutes remaining in the half. The lead changed hands four times
before a pair of free throws by Szalay at 11:36 gave the Bruins the
lead for good at 18-17. With Schmick’s 16-point first half, the
Bruins stretched their lead to 41-30.
In the second half, the Beacons could get no closer than nine
points at 49-40 with 13:54 to play. The Bruins, however, could never
pull away either. Parker came off the bench to score 11 of his 17 in
the second half as the Bruins built up as much as an 18-point lead,
going up 62-44 with 11:22 remaining on a pair of Parker free throws.
Taylor nailed three threes in a row to get the Beacons back within
10 at 69-59 at 6:52, but two more freebies by Parker started a 9-4
Bruin run to end the game.
Schmick hit three three-pointers en route to his 17 and Parker was
5 of 7 from the field and 7 of 7 from the line. Phil Heu-Weller
chipped in with 11 points. George Fox shot better than .500 for the
third straight game, hitting 26-51 for a .510 percentage. Szalay’s
13 boards helped the Bruins to a 33-26 advantage in rebounds.
Schmick and Brent Satern dished out five assists each.
Despite the 15-point win, Sundquist wasn’t entirely happy with his
team’s performance.
“I thought we played kind of selfishly, not like the team
basketball we had been playing,” he said. “Defensively, I felt we
were pretty good. We held them to 63, so on defense I felt we did a
pretty good job. Offensively, I don’t think were in sync. We would
go one-shot and out.”
George Fox (2-1) returns to action tonight (Saturday) with an 8
p.m. home game against Whitman to open NWC play. |
