A sluggish first half Friday was all Open Bible Christian School boys basketball coach Joe Van Ness needed to see.
Up 25-18 at halftime over Open Door, the Panthers received a halftime talk by Van Ness. The Panthers responded and outscored Open Door 23-8 in the third quarter en route to a 60-46 home win.
“In the first half, we didn’t play very well at all,” Van Ness said. “It was like we were in a fog or something.”
The Huskies boasted 6-8 freshman Cole Salter who provided a presence in the key for Open Door. In the first half, he blocked a few shots and altered a few more as the Panthers couldn’t break free from the Huskies.
However, Van Ness said it wasn’t what Salter was doing to the Panthers; it was what the Panthers were doing to themselves.
“We just did not play our game (in the first half),” Van Ness said. “We weren’t playing our game that we can and then we came out in the third quarter and that’s how we can play.”
The Panthers (2-2 overall) also had to deal with two starters assessed three fouls each in the first quarter — 6-6 center Davey Lucas and 6-2 forward Zac Bell.
“They weren’t playing defense with their feet,” Van Ness said. “They were playing defense with their hands.”
The Panthers had seven turnovers in the game, six of them in the first half. With just a single turnover in the second half, as well as nine second-half steals, the Panthers ran away from the Huskies, eventually building a 26-point lead.
Bell had 16 points to lead the Panthers; Lucas added 11 points and 16 rebounds. Guard Micah Gilday was 3-3 from 3-point range to finish with nine points.
The Panthers return to action Friday for their first Casco League game of the season, a 7 p.m. matchup at C.S. Lewis Academy.
