A six-point game turned into a 24-point drubbing Friday as Heritage drilled
the host C.S. Lewis Academy boys basketball team, 62-37.
Up 32-26 at halftime, Heritage took control of the game when the Knights
outscored the Watchmen 24-6. With a 56-32 lead after the third quarter, Heritage never
looked back.
C.S. Lewis coach Wade Witherspoons description of his teams third
quarter performance was understated.
That was the killer, he said. They got some fast breaks on
us and we went into a man-press and they broke our press and got some quick buckets that
way.
The Watchmen (0-3 overall) kept it close in the first half, though.
We played a really good first half, Witherspoon said. That
was the best half of basketball weve played so far. I think we even had the momentum
going into halftime and I expected to come out and play well and beat them. But in the
third quarter, we just broke down.
Junior Shaun Hoyt led the Watchmen with nine points and 13 rebounds; junior
Noah Hagglund added eight points. Sophomore Adam Harrington and seniors Peter Keyser and
Jared Wright added eight rebounds each for the Watchmen.
Witherspoon said the Watchmen are playing better, evident in the teams
21 turnovers Friday. In the previous two games the Watchmen recorded a total of 60
turnovers.
Were coming along fine, Witherspoon said. The guys are
starting to become a little more creative. Now that they know theyre offense,
theyre looking for more opportunities ... I think this team has a lot of potential
and I expect them to improve quite a bit over the year.
The Watchmen return to action Friday with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Open
Bible before a 2 p.m. road contest Saturday at Gervais. |
