It seems as if two possessions did in the
Newberg High School basketball team Tuesday at home against Sprague.
Early in the fourth quarter, Newberg led by a point. But Sprague
hit a field goal, along with a three-pointer on two consecutive
possessions. The Tigers went from being ahead by one to down by
four, then the Olympians hit several free throws down the stretch to
pick up the 65-57 win.
“The game kind of changed on two possessions,” Newberg coach Mark
Vernon said.
The Tigers continued to struggle with their outside shooting,
something that Vernon thought would be one of the strengths of the
team this season. So far this year the Tigers are hitting 18 percent
on three-point attempts.
“Our shooting has left us in the fourth quarter and has cost us a
couple of games,” he said. “If we were 32-of-100, we’d probably have
two more wins. The kids are playing hard, but we just need a few
shots to fall.”
Levi Fletcher led the Tigers with 15 points; Tony Torres added 14.
Josh Stoulil scored 13 for Newberg, followed by Kenny Gunn’s six
points and Lonny Gardner’s five points. Drew Steindl added four for
Newberg.
Newberg fell to 1-4 with the loss and started a two-day, four-team
tournament at West Linn Friday that runs through today (Saturday).
Other teams in the tournament include West Salem, West Linn and the
team Vernon coached for three years, Southridge. |
