Sharks
swim to fourth
in Christmas Invitational |
The Chehalem Swim Team placed fourth out of the 19 teams that swam in the
37th-annual Christmas Invitational in Forest Grove Dec. 6-7. Twenty-two Newberg athletes
finished in the top three of individual events, with 12 swimmers taking home blue ribbons.
Jordan Anderson, 13, recorded first-place finishes in the 100-meter butterfly
(1 minute, 10.45 seconds), 100 freestyle (58.59) and 50 freestyle (26.44); and
second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:13.05) and 100 backstroke (1:09.30).
Anderson also placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:31.79).
Chase Hansen, 13, notched firsts in the 200 freestyle (2:30.78), the 200
breaststroke (251.88) and 100 freestyle (1:04.63). Hansen also placed third in the 50
freestyle (29.49).
A pair of first-place finishes went to 14-year-old Jeff Hockema in the 200 freestyle
(2:00.10) and 200 backstroke (2;12.30). Hockema also finished second in the 100 butterfly
(1:02.80), 100 backstroke (1:02.37) and 200 butterfly (2:23.73). He took third in the 200
individual medley (2:13.92), as well.
Brian Cheney, 11, took home victories in the 200 breaststroke (3:11.66), 50
freestyle (29.23), 50 breaststroke (39.27) and 100 breaststroke (1:25.94).
Craig Cheney placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:13.95), 100 individual medley (
1:12.69) and 100 freestyle (1:02.08). He also finished second in the 50 butterfly (35.13),
50 backstroke (33.80) and 50 freestyle (28.55) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:21.75).
Adrienne Cheney, 14, finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:28.58) and 100
freestyle (1:01.97). She swam to second place in the 100 backstroke (1:10.35), 100
breaststroke (1:21.60), and 200 backstroke (2:37.43). Cheney also finished third in the
200 breaststroke (2:51.02).
Jamie Hockema, 11, was first to the wall in the 50 freestyle (31.53) and
third in the 50 breaststroke (42.38). Keilani Ladrini, 10, recorded victories in the 100
breaststroke (1:36.38) and 50 backstroke (39.33). Hockema also finished second in the 50
breaststroke (45.00) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:34.47).
Lyra Ladrini, 7, picked up five second-place ribbons for her age group, along
with a victory in the 25 breaststroke (25.39). She finished second in the 200 freestyle
(3:23.36), 25 butterfly (24.14), 50 freestyle (42.46), 100 individual medley (1:49.98) and
25 freestyle (20:62).
Siblings Nate and Alysha Bush, new to the team, did well, with 14-year-old
Nate finishing second in the 200 breaststroke (3:15.92), 50 freestyle (29.03), 100
breaststroke (1:28.32) and 100 freestyle (1:04.88). Alysha, 8, earned second place
(1:25.22) in her first 100 freestyle event.
Grant Aldred, 10, placed third in the 100 freestyle in the 9-and-10-year-old
division, with a time of 1:25.72. Aldred swam to a second-place in the 200 freestyle
(2:53.60) and 100 backstroke (1:36.0). Aldred also placed third in the 50 backstroke
(44.38) and the 100 freestyle (1:25.72).
Jon-Marc Anderson, also 10, took home third in the 50 breaststroke (53.39).
Kale Rogers, 9, finished second in the 50 breaststroke (45.97) and third in the 50
butterfly (39.88).
Other top finishes went to 16-year-old Jane Wilson for the 200 freestyle
(2:15.46), where she placed third. Dusty Palmore, 12, earned a third in the 100 butterfly
(1:27.93). Arielle Nelson, 13, took home a win in the 50 freestyle (31.42) and Rachel
Hamilton, 12, finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:26.03). Laura Maas, 12, placed
second in the 50 freestyle (29.20), the 100 breaststroke (1:22.33) and the 100 freestyle
(1:02.06). The time of 22.66 in the 50 breaststroke by Catherine Mays, 8, earned her
third. She also placed third in the 25 butterfly (18:70).
In the 6-and-under age group, Cole Aldred, 6, placed first in the 25
butterfly (37.99) and the 25 backstroke (35.76). Jimmy Johnson, also 6, won the 25
freestyle (39.13) and finished third in the 25 backstroke (47.56).
