The St. Paul High School boys basketball team notched its first win of the season in a weekend tournament, but fell to host Dufur in the championship game 58-44.
The Bucks (1-2) opened the tournament Friday with a 55-39 victory over Spray. Senior Levi Shull paced the Bucks with 11 points and senior Anthony Barrera chipped in 10. Junior Pat Charron added eight points and freshman Cody Kirk tossed in seven.
St. Paul coach Buell Gonzales Jr. emptied his bench as he played 11 players in all four quarters.
“I felt good about that,” Gonzales said.
St. Paul went up 14-3 after the first quarter and held a 26-15 halftime lead before a six-point third quarter by Spray proved to little to topple the Bucks. St. Paul’s biggest lead came in the fourth quarter when it held a 25-point advantage.
“(Spray was) a state tournament team last year and they’re in the same boat we are,” Gonzales said. “They lost a lot of people like we did. They’re young and had to start a bunch of freshmen and sophomores.”
On Saturday, St. Paul fell to Dufur. Shull scored 25 points, while Barrera added 13.
St. Paul went 14-15 from the free-throw line in the game, but couldn’t overcome the 25-39 performance by the Rangers. Three St. Paul players fouled out as the Bucks were whistled for 28 personal fouls.
Gonzales said Dufur utilized its post players, which hurt the Bucks.
“We got out of position and we had some calls on us and they capitalized and hit their free throws,” Gonzales said.
St. Paul opened up the game with a 12-2 lead, but Dufur pressed and slowly chipped away at the Buck lead. It was evident the Buckaroos need to improve on how it handles teams that press.
“We’ve got to learn how to handle that,” Gonzales said.
At halftime, Dufur led 31-28.
“I felt pretty good about that, but we only scored 16 points in the second half,” Gonzales said.
The Buckaroos return to action Dec. 16 with a 7 p.m. home game against Damascus Christian.
