Coach Rod Cook is happy Newberg debuts with intensity at David Douglas Monday

Newberg High School boys basketball coach Rod Cook was worried about one thing Monday — intensity.
Cook said he wasn’t sure how much intensity the Tigers would play with at the David Douglas Jamboree. Despite not notching a win in any of the three quarters, Cook was pleasantly surprised, however.
“We made some mistakes, but they’re fixable,” he said. “The thing I was worried about most was what kind of intensity we would come out with. We came out with some solid intensity and that was good to see.”
Newberg opened the jamboree against Wilson of the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL). The Tigers got out to an 7-2 lead, but Wilson rallied. A Trojan tip-in as time expired handed the Tigers an 11-9 loss in the eight-minute session.
The Tigers then took on McKay, a team from the Valley League. Once again, the Tigers got out to an early lead, this time 8-1. But just like the first game, Newberg’s opponent rallied and the game ended in a 10-10 tie.
“I thought the first two quarters we played, we played really well,” Cook said. “I was really pleased the effort and level of intensity we came out with and to be completely honest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.”
Newberg had 45 minutes before its final contest. That, paired with a hot-shooting David Douglas team, combined to hand the Tigers a 15-6 loss.
Cook said he doesn’t look at the quarters as games.
“They’re just a quarter,” he said. “(David Douglas) scored more points than us in a quarter. We gave up a couple of easy ones at the end and you don’t want to do that in any quarter, though.”
Cook said he will use the jamboree as a way to figure out player rotations.
“It was nice because when we had certain players out there they played extremely well and then we were able to get some different substitution patterns so it was nice to get everyone in there and have different lineups,” he said.
“These jamborees are weird. You want to win each quarter but the bottom line is that we’re trying to get these kids some playing time because for some of these kids it’s their first time at the varsity level.”
The Tigers tip off their season today (Wednesday) in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at Century.
