After three early ties and a 24-9 run to take a 30-15 lead midway through the first half, George Fox cruised to a 76-62 win Saturday over the Concordia University-Portland in the Concordia Women’s Basketball Classic.
Sparked by 11 first-half points from Kellie Thomas, the Bruins built up a 44-27 halftime lead and were never seriously threatened in the second half. The Bruins shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and hit 7-10 free throws to stymie the Cavaliers any time the host team made a run. The largest margin of the game came with 3:22 left when Kim Leith sank a pair of free throws for a 73-52 GFU lead.
Darby Cave led the Bruins with 19 points, sinking 9-12 from the field. Thomas and Leith finished with 15 each. Cave and Erin Powers had nine rebounds apiece and Amy Fitch pulled down eight as the Bruins held a sizable margin on the boards, 49-28. Fitch had a game-high seven assists as the Bruins racked up 26 assists on 29 field goals, one short of a George Fox single-game record.
George Fox improved to 2-0 on the season after posting a 62-55 win over Evergreen State Friday.
Despite a sluggish start that included being down by eight at the half and 13 early in the second half, George Fox recovered for the win.
The Bruins shot 24 percent in the first half (8-33). The Geoducks hit 50 percent (12-24) in taking a 30-22 lead into the break. After Evergreen hit two shots to open the second half, the George Fox defense tightened up and the shots began to fall. The Bruins also shot 21 free throws, making 12, in the second half, compared to a 1-2 half at the line for the Geoducks.
Cave and Sarah Myhre led the Bruins with 13 points apiece, with Leith adding 12 and Thomas 10. Cave had eight rebounds and Myhre and Fitch pulled down seven as the Bruins edged the Geoducks 43-40 on the boards. Thomas had four assists and four steals. Fitch also had four steals.
The Bruins travel to Minnesota next weekend to play some of the best D-III competition in the country in the Elite West Region Invitational. On Saturday the Bruins play Carleton College at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. On Nov. 30 the Bruins take on St. Thomas at Carleton in Northfield, Minn.
