Senior Ryan Powers and junior Jordan Burger were named to the Pac-9
Conference first team for their play during the Newberg High School boys soccer
season.
Powers, a first team pick a year ago, led the Tigers in scoring. His season
was highlighted by a hat trick he scored against Silverton in a 5-0 win. Powers also
scored the game-tying goal with less than two minutes remaining at Tualatin near the end
of the season.
He was one or two votes from being player of the year, said
first-year coach Hans Schneiter.
Burger earned his honor as the teams goalkeeper in just his first year
of playing the game. The opposition scored seven goals when Burger was between the posts.
It goes to show you what an athlete he is with not a lot of technique
and not a lot of training, Schneiter said.
Senior Charlie Bone, a first team pick last season as a defender, was named
to the second team. Schneiter said he was a little surprised by the selection, adding that
if the Tigers would have made the playoffs, he thought Bone would have been a first team
pick.
I think a lot of it was how we did in league, he said.
Three others from Newberg were honorable mention selections: seniors Johnny
Ramirez and Matt Friesen along with sophomore Chance Howard.
Schneiter also said he was surprised by those picks.
I think they would have been at least second team if we would have been
in the playoffs, Schneiter said.
The Tigers finished with a 7-3-4 overall record and 3-2-3 Pac-9 Conference mark. |
