Jake Kinne, a junior on the Newberg High School boys water polo team, was selected as the Pac-9 Conference’s Most Valuable Player by conference coaches last week.
The conference’s leading scorer, Kinne proved to be dominant in leading the Tigers. Two other teammates joined Kinne on the First Team. Juniors Kael Schlactus and Matt McCreith provided Newberg with a trio of players who could dominate as the boys team finished the season 12-0. Junior goalkeeper Todd Bradley was selected to the Second Team while sophomore Andrew Aylor was an Honorable Mention selection.
The Tigers proved to be tough in non-conference action as well. On Tuesday, the Tigers hosted the Gresham Gophers, the No. 1-seeded team from the Mt. Hood Conference. The Tigers led 13-5 at half and cruised to a 21-6 win. Kinne led the Tigers with seven goals, five assists, and two earned ejections. Dan Larkin added five goals for the Tigers while Schlactus tallied three goals, two assists, and five steals. Mitch Boysen and McCreith added two goals as Boysen recorded seven steals. McCreith added seven assists in the victory. Aylor and Ricki Rogers each scored a goal for the Tigers.
Newberg kicked off it’s quest for a state title Friday in Corvallis at the Osborn Aquatic Center. The Tigers faced Beaverton in the first round and led 8-4 at the end of the first. The Beavers cut the Newberg lead near the end of the third quarter but the Tigers rallied back and captured a 16-9 victory.
Kinne, again, led the way for the Tigers with 10 goals while McCreith and Schlactus scored two apiece. Rogers and Aylor added lone goals for the Tigers.
“We played really well,” said Jim McMaster, Newberg’s coach. “We were cleaning up some of the mistakes that we’d been making and that was really nice to see.”
The Tigers moved on Friday to face Aloha in a 5:20 p.m. matchup but results were unavailable as of press time.
On the girls side, Keala Walter and Bethany Joyce were selected as the co-Most Valuable Players in the conference.
Joyce, a junior, led the Tigers in scoring in virtually every game this season. She recorded several six-goal games during the season as she dominated the competition.
Joyce’s defensive counterpart was junior Keala Walter. The goalkeeper proved to be a defensive wall as she stymied the Pac-9’s seven other teams’ offenses.
Senior Megan McCreith, along with Joyce and McCreith, was also voted to the First Team while senior Jennifer Whited was named to the Second Team as the Tigers won the Pac-9 Conference for the 17th-straight season, going 14-0.
The Tigers kicked off state tournament action Friday against Westview but results were unavailable as of press time. McMaster said the state championship is up for grabs.
“There’s a lot of teams that could take state,” he said.
