The girls team notched its win over Sunset. Newberg senior Bethany Joyce got the Tigers on the board early. After her penalty shot went off the cross bar, the ball came back to her before she put it in the back of the net with 6:32 remaining in the period. After another goal by Joyce with 5:04 on a backhanded shot, she threw an assist to teammate Sasha Globig, who put the Tigers up 3-0 with 4:23 left.
Joyce scored twice more in the period, alongside another goal by Globig as the Tigers held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
After a Sunset score to open the second quarter, Joyce recorded a goal with 5:35 left in the first half before freshman Roxanne Dinger launched a long shot that found the back of the net.
Newberg held a 9-1 halftime advantage and continued to pour it on in the second half. Joyce scored three more goals in the second half to end up with seven goals. Jane Wilson added a pair of goals and senior Paloma Frutos added one with 3:22 left in the game.
The win put the Tigers into the semifinals against Beaverton, a team that narrowly escaped from North Eugene, 8-7. The Tigers took on the Beavers Friday night but results were unavailable as of press time.
If Newberg won it would play in the finals at 5:45 p.m. today (Saturday); if the Tigers fell to Beaverton they would play at 3:15 p.m. for third place.
On the boys side, Newberg got off to a slow start in its 15-3 triumph over Beaverton. Senior Dan Larkin scored the match’s first goal with 6:14 left only to see Beaverton tie the game moments later. But goals by seniors Jake Kinne and Matt McCreith gave the Tigers a narrow 3-1 lead after the first quarter.

With 21 seconds gone in the third quarter, McCreith’s goal put the Tigers up 6-2. Later senior Mitch Boysen scored and sophomore Ricky Rogers added a pair of goals before the end of the period to put the Tigers up 9-2.
Larkin scored two quick goals to open the final quarter and Beaverton was never able to recover. Aylor notched a goal before Kinne added his fourth goal of the game with 4:29 left. With 2:00 left, the Newberg substitutes came in and added to the NHS lead as senior Aaron Lewis and junior Harry Hatcher each scored a goal to preserve the NHS victory.
The Tigers took on the winner of the Ashland vs. Aloha game Friday night, but results were unavailable as of press time.
If the Tigers were to win, they would play for the state championship at 7 p.m. today; if they fell they would play for third place in a 4:30 p.m. contest.
