Defense lifts Newberg

Senior Melinda Lee might have scored the goal, but it was a pesky Newberg defense that ensured the victory.
In a game controlled primarily by Tigard, it was the Newberg High School girls soccer team that earned a 1-0 home win Thursday.
The Tigard offense continually assaulted Newberg’s defense with shot after shot. But behind defensive stalwarts Jessica Parrish, Tesia Eisenberg, Hali Bellisario, Taylor Gray, Liz Petersen and goalkeeper Kaylee Scholz, the Newberg defense bent but never broke.
“They played amazing,” said coach Nick Chapmane. “Their defense was just super. Their one-on-one defense was right on the mark, along with the team defense. The girls are just super and just love playing defense.”
Tigard nearly took control with a goal late in the first half. Tigard continued its onslaught but the Newberg defense managed to fend off the Tigers.
Newberg (2-1 Pac-9 Conference, 5-1-2 overall) found an offensive rhythm in the second half. About 15 minutes into the second half, Sarah Wolfer crossed the ball from the left side of the field to the center where Lee tapped the ball into the goal past the outstretched hands of the Tigard goalkeeper.
Newberg had few chances for an insurance goal, but the team’s defense took a stand and denied any opportunity the Tigard offense had.
“They did a good job,” Chapman said. “You can’t win without a defense and they’re fast and they know what they’re doing.”
Chapman said he wouldn’t classify the win as the biggest victory of the season.
“We just need this to go into the rest of the league,” he said.
Newberg came into the game off a 3-0 loss Tuesday to No. 2-ranked Tualatin.
“They’re just good,” Chapman said of the Timberwolves. “My girls played amazing, but Tualatin is just a good team.”
Going into the week, Chapman said if the Tigers could get a win and a tie during the week, it would probably be a best-case scenario. But since the Tigers went 1-1 against two of the toughest teams in the league, he was happy with the team’s situation.
“We’re where we need to be,” he said.
Newberg returns to action Monday in a 7 p.m. game at Forest Grove.
