OREGON CITY — Sophomore Sarah Boyd won her
second consecutive Pacific Conference cross country individual meet
Thursday with a personal best time of 19 minutes, 12.20 seconds.
But, she barely held on for the win.
Boyd cruised along for the majority of the race and held a lead of
at least 100 yards. However, Tigard’s Ali Davis caught Boyd in the
final stretch. Both were neck and neck as they entered the final 100
meters on the track when Boyd outstretched David for the win. Davis
took second with a time of 19:12.89.
Last
season, Boyd won the same district meet as a freshman with a time of
18:52.
“I was hoping to do that again, but (19:12) was a season (personal
record),” she said.
Boyd wasn’t sure exactly how Davis caught her in the final stretch
run.
“I don’t know,” she said. “(Davis) ran a really good race.”
Newberg coach Bruce Sinkbeil said: “That was a gutsy performance.”
In that critical final stretch, Boyd, who holds Newberg’s No. 2
all-time school record of 18:52, said she wanted to win, but it was
attaining a personal best that drove her.
“My goal this race was to PR and if a win comes with it, that’s
good, but once I already knew I would get my PR, I wanted to get the
next best thing which was the win,” she said.
Newberg senior Dani Hawblitzel moved into the fifth spot in school
history with her personal best of 19:48, which also qualified her
for the state meet for the second consecutive year.
Other runners for Newberg were senior Mary Stutzman (19th, personal
best of 20:52), senior Marlee Zakrevsky (36th, 23:08), sophomore Amy
Thorp (38th, 23:18), junior Karina Chavez (39th, 23:29) and junior
Courtnee Roberts (42nd, 24:41).
Sophomore Santana Alvarez made a personal best, finishing fifth in
a time of 16:38 to qualify for state, followed by the 11th-place and
state-qualifier Clint Cardwell (16:52). Other Newberg runners who
placed were: freshman Joseph Pia (16th, 17:06), junior Nathan Bauer
(20th, 17:19), senior Collin Roholt (25th, 17:32), sophomore
Allesandro Pia (30th, 17:42) and senior Les Comfort (31st, 17:44).
The race by Alvarez was his best of the season, Sinkbeil said.
“(Alvarez) ran an awesome race, moving from about 30th to fourth
during the second mile,” he said.
Canby’s Sean Coleman won the race with a time of 15:55, good for
10th-place in conference history.
The cross country state championships are slated for Nov. 4 at Lane
Community College in Eugene.
