George
Fox got everything but a win during the weekend.
On Saturday the Bruins settled for a 2-2 tie in double overtime with the
University of Puget Sound, then fell 4-1 Sunday to Pacific Lutheran University.
On Saturday, Derek Doughertys desperation goal off a corner kick with
seven seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime. The Bruins battled the
Northwest Conference-leading University of Puget Sound Loggers to a 2-2 double-overtime
deadlock.
The game was scoreless through the first half. George Fox broke
through as Kris Van Houten was fouled by Puget Sound goalkeeper Brian Lawson inside the
penalty box and made the subsequent penalty kick at the 66:29 mark of the second half.
The Loggers rallied in the last six minutes, scoring twice in the space of 78
seconds to take the lead. Josh Snyder snuck a goal past Bruin keeper Ron Besser from the
middle of a crowd after a pass from Elliot Peterson at the 84:08 mark. Tyler Niemack
notched his ninth goal with a bullet from 20 yards out on the left side at 85:26.
That appeared it would be enough for the Loggers to win, but Van Houten sent
a corner kick from the right into the middle for Dougherty, who knocked in his third score
of the season at 89:53 to knot the game.
Both teams had chances to score in the two overtimes, each getting three
shots that might have won the game, but none found the mark. For the game Puget Sound got
23 shots, 10 on goal, and George Fox had 14 shots, five on goal. Lawson had three saves
for UPS, Besser eight for the Bruins.
On Sunday, Pacific Lutheran saw four goals from four different players and
three assists from three others, enabling the Lutes to take a 4-1.
Pacific Lutheran controlled the offensive game with 22 shots and 14 on goal,
compared to 15 overall and six on goal from the Bruins. Three Lute keepers combined for
five saves, while Besser stopped 10 in goal.
George Fox fell to 3-8-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the conference. The Bruins
return to action this weekend with a 2:30 p.m. Saturday game at Whitman College followed
by a 2:30 p.m. contest at Whitworth Sunday. |
