Sage 2.JPG (47932 bytes)   The Newberg High School boys cross country team took a big step toward the Pac-9 Conference dual meet championship at a three-way meet at Tigard Wednesday.
The meet, scored in a dual meet format, was a showdown for the boys teams. Newberg and Canby were undefeated in conference action prior to the meet, so the race would prove to be the most important one of the dual meet season. Newberg (6-0 Pac-9 Conference) defeated Canby 25-30 and dropped Tigard 17-41.
With dual meets remaining against Woodburn and McMinnville next week, Newberg is headed to the title.
“This was a big meet for the boys as Canby is our biggest challenge in trying to repeat as the dual meet champions,” said NHS coach Bruce Sinkbeil. “With this win we should finish 8-0 after (McMinnville) and Woodburn next week.”
Senior Sage Canaday set a course record with a time of 15 minutes, 13 seconds on a course that is about 100 meters short of the appropriate distance. Senior Nick Bellisario came in second (16:04) and senior Vertin Alvarez placed fourth for the Tigers (16:06).
With the Tigers taking three out of the top four spots, it was up to Newberg’s fourth and fifth runners to give the Tigers the victory. Senior Trevor Arsenault and Peter Keyser came through for the Tigers. Arsenault finished ninth (16:42); Keyser placed 10th (16:45).
“We thought we would get three in front of Canby’s second runner, so the key for us was getting our fourth and fifth (runners) in front of their fifth,” Sinkbeil said. “(Arsenault) and (Keyser) stepped up and ran great to finish in front of Canby’s fifth.”
Daniel Alvarez placed 14th with a 17:00 time and Steven De La Vega earned a 22nd finish at 17:35. Josh Lytle finished 25th (17:56), Josh Stutzman took home 28th (18:13), and Jon Shaffer placed 29th (18:21).
“This was really a quality race as both teams really wanted to win,” Sinkbeil said.
On the girls side, Newberg fell to Tigard 40-19 and lost to Canby 38-21. The team sits at 3-3 in the conference.
Mandy Craig finished seventh (20:33), Rebecca Mishler took home ninth (21:12), Holly Mishler earned a 10th-place finish (21:13) and Mary Stutzman was 20th (24:55). Leah Webber ran to a 23rd-place finish at 26:15 and Michelle Sweeney placed 25th (28:04).
The Tigers ran without their top runner, senior Meghan Leonard, who was playing on girls soccer team’s game against Canby.
With just a meet left, Sinkbeil is confident the Tigers will pick up a win.
“The girls should finish 4-4 after next week,” he said.
The Tigers take on McMinnville and Woodburn at 4 p.m. at Willamette Mission State Park near Brooks.
Notes: Colin Roholt led the Newberg boys junior varsity team Wednesday with a victory in the meet (18:05). Ross Pederson placed second (18:11). Sterling Hayes took home ninth (19:20) and Tyler Dexter earned a 16th-place finish (20:34). Collin Rennick was 20th (20:54), Jon Chandler took home 23rd (21:37), Kori Cacciacarro placed 29th (21:40) and Tim Siler ran to a 31st-place showing at 23:04.
