With two of its
most important games of the season on the horizon, the Newberg High
School girls soccer team opened Pac-9 Conference play Thursday with
a 5-1 home win over Woodburn.
Newberg
scored 13 minutes into the game when freshman Kymberly Witmer sailed
a corner kick over the outstretched hands of the Woodburn
goalkeeper. At the 29-minute mark sophomore forward Elise Larrett
scored again, followed by a second goal four minutes before
halftime.
NHS senior forward Jamie Hinsz got the second half started quickly
when she scored 10 minutes into the half. Two minutes later, Witmer
struck again. Woodburn’s lone goal of the game came midway through
the second half.
Newberg’s starters played sparingly in the second half, including
Larrett, who never took the field in the final stanza. Senior
defender Ashley Parrish and others sat out the first half, but
received minutes in the second half.
“It’s a good win,” said NHS coach Nick Chapman. “It’s good to start
off next week because we’ve got two hard games coming up on Monday
and Thursday.”
Newberg will travel to No. 7-ranked Tualatin for a 7 p.m contest
Monday, followed by Newberg’s 4:30 p.m. home game against an
always-tough Tigard program Thursday.
“If we can pull off two wins, obviously we’re better off, but if we
pull out 1-1 or a win and a tie, that would be great,” Chapman said.
“This week will pretty much determine just how well our girls will
rise to an occasion.”
Newberg came into Thursday’s win off a 2-1 home loss Tuesday to
West Linn. The Lions scored a pair of goals within two minutes of
each other in the first half to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Newberg
scored its lone goal in the 65th minute when Larrett chased down a
ball that West Linn goalkeeper Laura Wood came out of the box to
get. The ball bounced off Wood and right back to Larrett who
dribbled it in the last 15 yards untouched for an easy score.
“They’re a good team,” Chapman said of West Linn.
“They’ve just got a good history. You’re going to win and you’re
going to lose and we just played a good team and just didn’t pull
off a win. The girls played very well, though.”
Newberg sits at 3-1-2 overall and 1-0 in Pac-9. Chapman said while
the team’s conditioning and speed continues to best teams, the
Tigers need to improve their movement away from the ball and their
field vision.
“They’re playing well and as long as (they) keep playing the way
they have been, I think we’ve got a good shot at the playoffs,” he
said. “We’ve just got to make sure we keep defending well and take
down the teams we can win and not get an out-of-the-blue upset,
because those are the ones that hurt you.” |
