Newberg High School senior Sage Canaday broke a 21-year-old record Saturday in winning the Champoeg Invitational Saturday.
Canaday’s time of 15 minutes, 36 seconds not only broke the course record set in 1982, but was also a personal best. Canaday’s former best at the meet was 16:37.
Canaday is the top runner for Newberg, which is ranked No. 8 in the state. Canaday’s time helped the Tigers claim the team win with 51 points, followed by Franklin (69), Oregon City (83), South Salem (112), The Dalles (146), Wilson (147), Milwaukie (148), West Linn (159), Lakeridge (261) and North Salem (297).
The boys team proved to be especially tough on Saturday as all of its varsity runners recorded personal bests. Nick Bellisario took home second (16:15) and also beat his previous personal best of 17:45. His time also moved him into the school’s all-time top-10 list. Vertin Alvarez placed fourth overall (16:21) and improved on his previous best of 16:43.
Trevor Arsenault finished 18th (17:17) for the Tigers and topped his former best of 17:45. Daniel Alvarez placed 22nd (17:29) for Newberg, cutting his previous best of 18:36. Peter Keyser finished 23rd for Newberg (17:31), down from a former best of 18:08, while Jon Shaffer finished 37th (18:25), which is also a personal best from his previous best time (19:22).
“The boys top six was as solid as it’s been all year with the top three running well and our (four through six spots) starting to close the gap,” said NHS coach Bruce Sinkbeil.
On the girls side, Newberg placed third, but was a mere three points away from second place. The Dalles won the meet with 68 points, followed by South Salem (90), Newberg (93), Wilson 118), Lakeridge (135), West Linn (157) and Milwaukie (178). Oregon City, Franklin and North Salem were offered up incomplete teams.
Meghan Leonard placed third overall (19:33) to top her previous personal best of 20:10. Mandy Craig placed seventh (20:04), cutting into her former best of 20:28. Rebecca Mishler placed 15th (21:00) and knocked off more than two minutes off of her previous best time of 23:43. Holly Mishler placed 18th (21:04) and shaved more than two minutes off a previous 23:42 personal best time. Marlee Zakrevsky placed 50th (25:46).
“The girls team also got a lot better with the Mishlers running (personal bests) by nearly a minute to also move into the top-10 at NHS,” Sinkbeil said. “The girls third-place finish was great to see.”
Overall, the meets couldn’t have gone much better for the Tigers.
“It was an almost perfect day to run and there were some fast times,” Sinkbeil said. “This was a quality meet with some fast times and our kids responded well.”
The Tigers return to Pac-9 Conference action Wednesday with a big meet against conference foes Canby and Tigard at Tigard.
Notes: The Newberg junior varsity boys team claimed the victory at the meet with 29 points, followed by Oregon City (59), South Salem (103), Franklin (114), Wilson (120), West Linn (131) and North Salem (222). Lakeridge, The Dalles and Milwaukie were all incomplete.
Stephen De La Vega placed second in the event (18:01), followed by a third-place finish by Josh Lytle (18:05). Josh Stutzman finished seventh (18:37) and Ross Pederson came in eighth (18:52). Collin Roholt finished ninth for the Tigers (18:54); Sterling Hayes recorded a 15th-place finish (19:52). Dan Chandler recorded a 17th-place finish (20:02), while Colin Rennick took home 24th place (20:17). Tyler Dexter placed 28th for the Tigers (20:25). Kori Cacciacarro recorded a 46th-place finish (21:23). Jon Chandler placed 47th (21:29) and Tim Siler came in 57th for the Tigers (22:37).
