The Newberg High School girls soccer team scored seven second-half goals Thursday en route to a 10-0 home win over Dallas.
Whitney Hall led the Newberg attack with a hat trick and Meghan Leonard added two goals and two assists. Maggie Warner, Sara Zahler, Elyse Taennler, Kelci Harn and Alma Acosta scored a goal each in the victory, as well.
Newberg got on the board early with a goal by Hall followed by a quick score by Leonard. Then with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Zahler dribbled down the right wing and knocked the ball into the back of the far corner to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage.
In the second half, Newberg turned it up offensively and scored seven additional times to claim the triumph.
The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was rescheduled to Thursday because Dallas players wanted to compete in their school’s powder puff football game. As a result, however, Dallas’ leading scorer and starting defender was injured and couldn’t compete against Newberg.
Newberg came off a 2-2 tie with Forest Grove Monday. The Vikings scored a first-half goal and then took advantage of a penalty kick to put Newberg in a 2-0 hole.
“I don’t know what happened with the penalty kick,” said Newberg coach Tim Tsohantaridis. “I called the ref over to ask him what the call was and he couldn’t tell me what he called, so ...”
But in the final 10 minutes, Newberg came alive, scoring twice. Newberg also had two other chances to score, but couldn’t convert to pull out the win.
“Our girls played 10 good minutes against Forest Grove,” Tsohantaridis said. “In the last 10 minutes they played like there’s no tomorrow.”
The coach said the Tigers were unable to shake off their sluggish first-half start.
“(The Vikings) were outworking us and our girls didn’t come to play,” he said. “They weren’t there mentally. It was just one of those things where we went all out in the last 10 minutes.”
The fact the Tigers came out of the game without a loss was important to their playoff hopes.
“The fact that we got the tie is something that I really think is going to help us down the road,” Tsohantaridis said. “You don’t want to lose when you’re fighting for a spot in the state playoffs, so we can’t have anymore results like that.”
The Tigers return to action Monday with a 4 p.m. road game at McMinnville.
