George Fox got off to a slow start last week when it played three games in
a matter of five games and lost all three contests.
On Sept. 24, the Bruins were blanked 3-0 on the road by Pacific University.
Things didnt get any better for the Bruins on Saturday when they fell
to Linfield, 4-0.
The Wildcats showed the Bruins why they are the No. 6-ranked team in the
NSCAA/NCAA Division III national poll.
Linfield keeper Phil Haines, who earned the win, and Newberg High School
graduate Grant Williams turned away two shots each, and the Wildcat defense allowed nine
shots total as the Bruins were shut out for the second straight game. Meanwhile, the
Linfield offense took 21 shots, 15 on goal, with four different players scoring one goal
apiece.
Bruin keeper Ron Besser, who led the conference in saves last year, kept the
margin from being even larger as he made 11 saves on Wildcat shots.
The Bruins did score Sunday, but two goals werent enough as Willamette dumped
the Bruins, 3-2.
After taking an early two-goal lead in the first 20 minutes of play, the
Bruins couldnt muster anymore offense and the Northwest Conference-leading
Willamette University Bearcats rallied for the win.
George Fox had two good opportunities to tie late in the game, but header
attempts missed the upper crossbar by inches and the Bearcats were able to maintain their
lead.
George Fox fell to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference with the losses.
The Bruins return to action this weekend with a 2:30 p.m. game Saturday at
Whitworth and a 2:30 p.m. game Sunday at Whitman.
Notes:
Sophomore Michael Chapman received honorable mention for Northwest Conference
Offensive Player of the Week honors for Sept. 22-28 in the Bruins game vs.
Willamette.
Chapman scored a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes to give the Bruins an
early 2-0 lead over the league-leading Bearcats, a game the Bruins eventually lost 3-2.
Chapman ranks among the top five in the conference now in goals with four. |
