Love INC working with area shops to provide auto service to people in need

Cars break down over time, even with preventive maintenance. But often, when money is tight and the choice is between buying new car parts or feeding the family, nutrition wins out over transportation.
So, when Love INC (In the Name of Christ) asked Steve Drew of Steve’s Automotive to provide the labor for car repairs for people in need for free, he agreed.
Drew’s is one of several car repair shops in Newberg — including Precision Automotive, Mountainside Automotive and Doran Automotive — who have agreed to help people in need with car repairs.
   But there’s a catch.
Before the car can be repaired, the person who owns the car must be put through an intake with Love INC — a clearinghouse for churches in the area that help folks in need. Once the need is determined, the client will be given a voucher and sent to the repair shop for help with their car. The plan ensures that people who need the assistance are the ones receiving it, Drew said.
So far Steve’s Automotive has provided his services on about a dozen cars with needs ranging from repairing blown head gaskets, to replacing brakes and installing a new clutch.
“It’s usually single moms who are struggling to get by and need a car to get back and forth to work and they don’t have the money to fix their car,” he said.
Drew said he provides his services to give something back to the community. He said Love INC is a great resource for businesses like his that are interested in offering a similar service. “We get people every day who want something for nothing,” he said. “Love INC sends people with a clear need.”
Polly Siler, executive director for Love INC, is seeking more volunteers for the car repair ministry. “Mechanics who want to help out should call Love INC and we’ll get them hooked up,” she said.
