In the past few months
volunteers at Love INC (In the Name of Christ) began hearing
concerns the Oregon Health Plan, the state’s state-funded insurance
system for low income people, would no longer cover dental and
vision care for children.
Volunteers were worried that without the coverage, many children in
Newberg would go without vision screenings, well child checkups and
dental cleanings.
They decided to do something about it. Their solution was
Children’s Health Day.
The event is a collaboration of six local churches, two
universities, a club, an organization, more than 20 health care
professionals and community volunteers. It will bring health care
and activities to children in Newberg from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 19
at Newberg First Baptist Church. 1619 E. Second St.
A limited number of sports physicals will also be available for
students in middle and high school who do not have health insurance,
representatives of Love INC said.
Children signed up for services will receive a backpack full of
school supplies as well. A barbecue will be offered for those
waiting for services.
Love INC, a clearinghouse for church services in the area, began
July 1 scheduling appointments for the event. Appointments are
filling up fast, so registration is required. Students are eligible
for only those services they don’t have insurance for, organizers
said.
Health care professionals interested in offering services are
invited to call Love INC to volunteer.
