Several area churches will invite youth in this summer for the annual
phenomenon known as vacation Bible schools.
Any type of school during summer months may be met with groans from youth; aware of
this, churches say they do their best to make the events fun, as well as educational.
Following are a list of vacation Bible schools that have been announced by
area churches (note: some churches will charge a registration fee for their activities).
The list is not comprehensive, and those interested in finding out whether a specific
church will be holding a vacation Bible school may contact that church using the contact
information given in the church directory below.
River Street Church of God, 715 S. River St., began their session of
Veggie Town Values: Building Citizens for Gods Community on June 8, but
sessions continue from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. each Sunday from June 15 to July 13.
One of the other earlier planned events will be held next week at Newberg
Church of Christ, 2503 Haworth Ave. The church is hosting the popular Son Harvest County
Fair for children ages 4 through those entering fifth grade, from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. June
16-19. To pick up a registration form, contact the church at 503-538-4789 or by e-mail at chofch@teleport.com.
A trio of churches have teamed up to share teams and present three summer
sessions to meet families needs. Each church will put on the Son Harvest County Fair
theme.
Joyful Servant Lutheran Church, 1716 N. Villa Road, has their event schedule
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 22-26.
Children as young as 3 years old up to those in middle school will find
classes suited to their age groups. An adult class will also be held, and high school
students may choose between helping with activities for the younger children or joining
the adults class. To register, contact the church at 503-538-0475.
The second partnering church, First Presbyterian, 501 Mission Drive, will host vacation
Bible school from 9 a.m. to noon July 7-11, for children ages 3 through fifth grade.
St. Michaels/San Miguel Episcopal Church, 110 S. Everest Road, will
complete the slate with classes 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Aug. 18-22.
July kicks off with a mystery theme, as Chehalem Valley Baptist, 26155 N.E.
Bell Road, tackles a Sherlock Holmes-type event. Great Kingdom Caper will be
held from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. July 7-11 for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Registration is not required but is helpful for planning; to register, contact
Beverly at 503-554-8242 or the church at 503-538-4158.
A Bug Safari is planned by First United Methodist Church, 1205
Deborah Road, for the next July week. Kids will be zipping and buzzing through
games, crafts, music and other activities, according to the church. Youth ages 4
through fifth grade may attend the week of events, held from 9 a.m. to noon July 14-18.
A barbecue and vacation Bible school registration will be held at the
church July 13, following worship. Those wishing to register may also contact the church
at 503-538-5404.
The Super Cool Undersea Bible Adventure will splash down at
Newberg Christian Church, 2315 Villa Road, from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. July 21-25. The week
will benefit mission projects, including F.I.S.H. (Friends In Service to Humanity), and
provide care packages to military men and women.
Children ages 4 through those in middle school may attend the event. To
register, call 503-538-3104.
In another example of cooperation this summer, two Friends churches will join
together to hold their version of vacation Bible school in August.
Newberg Friends Church and North Valley Friends Church will meet
students for Son Seekers: Diggin the Righteous Truth from 9 a.m. to noon
Aug. 11-15, followed by a celebration picnic on the final day.
Children 3 years old through those in fifth grade are welcome at the event,
and registration is available by calling 503-538-8381 or 503-538-5340. |
