Pastoral Pondering: Respond to the spiritual hunger going on all around us every day

Spirit Mountain Casino has provided a grant to a religious-based nonprofit agency in Newberg that provides volunteers for helping the elderly.
The Spirit Mountain Community Fund announced recently it will give Faith in Action $6,000 to recruit and train volunteers. Faith in Action (it changed from Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers in summer 2004) has more than 100 volunteers who, among other duties, do minor home repairs, provide transportation to medical appointments, and visit with the elderly and disabled.
Janet Irish, Faith in Action program manager, said the money will be used “for some of the normal things we do to recruit volunteers,” including printing volunteer recruitment brochures and inserts in church bulletins, as well as for staff time to make presentations.
This was the first time Faith in Action applied for a Spirit Mountain grant, Irish said.
The community fund was created by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde with 6 percent of the proceeds from Spirit Mountain Casino. Established in 1997, the fund has given more than $30 million to area nonprofit agencies.
Spirit Mountain will formally present the grant to Faith in Action officials at its annual meeting, slated for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Providence Newberg Hospital.
The opportunity to volunteer continues at Faith in Action and extends to helping older adults with chores, driving them to appointments, assisting in Faith in Action’s office, coaching exercise classes or visiting with a special-needs child.
For more information or to learn how to volunteer, call Irish at 503-537-1549. In addition to completing an application, potential volunteers undergo a 30- to 45-minute training session. Faith in Action’s office is in the Chehalem Senior Center, 101 W. Foothills Drive.
