Puzzling solution to raising funds

“Chiracahua Stream” depicts a post-impressionist/romanticized image of a pocket of a stream Gary Buhler, owner of Blue Trout Gallery, found in Arizona. The price of the original painting is $2,000.
Puzzle lovers can purchase the image for $15.
The 500-piece puzzles are part of a fund-raising effort by Faith in Action, formerly Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers.
The image includes rocks, trees and water in blues, greens, browns and reds, seeming infused with light and, as the artist points out, could easily be in the Pacific Northwest, although he found it in Arizona.
Jan Irish, program manager for Faith in Action, (FIA), a program that matches volunteers with people who have needs, said she got the idea for the puzzle sale from a similar program in West Virginia.
They chose Buhler as the artist because he is well-known and local. He agreed to provide FIA with five or six images that he thought would be suitable for use.
“Faith in Action wanted to do a fund-raiser and I thought it was a creative way to do it,” he said. “They have a great program I wanted to support.”
Although puzzles are not generally considered a fine art media, Buhler said he was pleased to help.
“If it causes people to donate money to a charitable organization, I’m happy with that,” he said. “It allows people to get the image of my paintings for an inexpensive price and the money goes to a good cause.”
Once the painting was chosen, local photographer Tom Strand agreed to photograph it. The photo will be transformed into a puzzle and depicted on the top of the puzzle box.
Although still being manufactured, Irish hopes to see the puzzles completed in November, early enough for Christmas gift purchasing. She wants to sell the puzzles locally and hopes Newberg merchants will place the puzzles in their stores.
By buying a puzzle for a gift, purchasers help support the program and help older folks maintain independence and remain in their own homes, Irish said. “And it also seemed like a good match,” she concluded.
